A Russian military officer who had recently returned from fighting in Ukraine has been assassinated in what looks like an organised hit in a village in the Moscow region, the TASS state news agency reported on Wednesday.

Nikita Klenkov, a deputy commander of a unit for Russia's military intelligence agency (GRU), was shot dead in Moscow Oblast by an unknown assailant, Russian state-controlled media reported on Oct. 16.

Nikita Klenkov, 44, was reportedly gunned down inside of a car in the village of Melenki in the Moscow region.

The cold blooded killing is just the latest in a spree of shootings that have targeted senior Russian commanders inside their own country, spreading fear through the officer ranks.
