Prabowo Subianto has been sworn in as Indonesia's eighth president. This completes his journey from an ex-general accused of rights abuses during the dark days of Indonesia’s military dictatorship to the presidential palace.

In succeeding Joko Widodo to the presidency, Prabowo is expected to take a more hands-on and personal approach to major policy areas.

Prabowo, known for his nationalist views, was sworn in along with Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of the last president.
