Stanford has faced SMU just once before Saturday, but the two new ACC schools will meet every season for the foreseeable future.

SMU will have to get used to the West Coast travel. The ACC schedule is laid out so that the 14 returning teams won’t have to travel to California in back-to-back seasons. SMU, on the other hand, has annual matchups with Cal and Stanford and is set to travel to Cal next season.

When Stanford and SMU were part of the ACC's westward expansion last year, they were set up as annual rivals in football in a plan to cut down on coast-to-coast trips. The first edition of a matchup that hasn't been played since the 1936 Rose Bowl is set for Saturday night when the 21st ranked Mustangs (5-1,

Stanford has been outscored 120-28 in the past three games and now faces its third ranked opponent in four games.

Former Pac-12 program Stanford will host the Mustangs in just their second meeting all time and first in over 80 years.

This is the first conference meeting between the ACC newcomers. The Mustangs are off to a strong start and are trying to maintain their perfect conference record. The Cardinal have lost three straight games by a combined total of 92 points and seek their first home win in the ACC.
