The world’s largest retailer is the buyer of the region’s largest shopping mall. A spokesman for Walmart confirmed that it is the new owner of Monroeville Mall, the 1.2 million-square-foot shopping complex on 186 acres of land that has been a focal point of the East suburbs for more than 50 years.

Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) is in focus this morning after announcing the purchase of Monroeville Mall from CBL Properties for $34 million in cash. The retailer hasn’t disclosed any specific plans for the mall,

Bentonville-based Walmart is spending $34 million to acquire Monroeville Mall located in the Pittsburgh, Pa., metro. The global retailer is also selling its Canadian trucking fleet to Canada Cartage.

Retail giant Walmart bought Monroeville Mall, a spokesman confirmed Tuesday. But no specific plans for the 186-acre site have been released, said Mark Rickel, director of corporate communications for Walmart.
