A Waffle House worker is expressing concern over the recent egg surcharge the restaurant is passing onto its customers.

“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” Waffle House said in a statement. “We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow.”

While other restaurants add egg surcharges, Cracker Barrel gives loyalty members double rewards on egg dishes.

Waffle House announced it will be adding a $0.50 surcharge to all egg items on the menu sold at its more than 2,000 locations because of soaring egg prices caused by the bird flu. The surcharge went into effect Monday.

Waffle House says temporary increase took effect on Monday and impacts all menus at the 24-hour chain's restaurants.

In a letter from Waffle House's headquarters in Norcross on Monday, the diner chain has implemented a 50-cent surcharge per egg to all menus. The company said, rather than increasing prices across the menu, this is a temporary targeted charge tied to the unprecedented rise in egg prices caused by bird flu.

Eggs will continue to be available in customers' favorite menu items despite the extra charge, according to the chain, which also said it hopes the price fluctuations will be "short-lived."

While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived, we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the Atlanta-based restaurant said.

Waffle House is charging an additional 50 cents per egg to offset rising costs. The restaurant chain said it hopes the hike is temporary.

Waffle House became one of the first big chains to join smaller restaurants with surcharges for egg dishes. Economists don’t see near-term relief on egg prices.
