The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won or is leading in 47 seats in the 70-member legislative assembly, while the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead in 23 seats, according to data from the Election Commission of India (EC).

Vote counting started early Saturday in the high-stakes state legislature election in India’s federal territory, including New Delhi.

Out of 7 Assembly seats in Delhi where Muslims comprise a major chunk of voters, AAP won six, while the remaining one going to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While senior AAP leader Gopal Rai won from Babarpur, the party also retained Okhla, which houses Shaheen Bagh that saw widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2020.
