Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic says he won’t attend an annual BRICS summit this week as the Balkan country tries to balance its ties with Russia with efforts to join the European Union and to improve relations with US.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — European Union candidate Serbia will continue to refuse to impose sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine despite Western pressure, Serbia’s leader said after his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić called Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the first time in 2.5 years. He thanked him for the gas. In the published video, Vučić said that he and Putin had a “very good conversation.
