Fresh onions are the likely source of an E. coli outbreak at McDonald's restaurants that has sickened 49 people and killed one, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said late on Wednesday, alarming some McDonald's customers and other fast-food chains using onions as an ingredient.

The investigation into the E. coli outbreak in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that has killed at least one person and sickened nearly 50 others increasingly points to the slivered onions served on the hamburgers.

Meanwhile, other fast-food restaurants — including Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and Burger King — pulled onions from some menus.
