Retail sales rose by more than expected in September, with an increase of 0.4% exceeding economists expectations as the consumer showed signs of continued strength.

Retail sales volumes (quantity bought) are estimated to have risen by 0.3% in September 2024, following a rise of 1.0% in August 2024 (unrevised from our last publication). Computers and telecommunications retailers grew strongly but were partly offset by decreases in supermarkets.

Retail sales in the United States accelerated in September, according to government data released Thursday, a positive sign for consumption as the election approaches.
