According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya might replace Rohit Sharma as captain if India fail to win the Champions Trophy 2025. In fact, head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted Hardik Pandya to become the vice-captain of the Indian team.

Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel smashed half-centuries as India defeated England by four wickets in the opening one-day international on Thursday and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series that is a warmup for the Champions Trophy.

Shubman Gill has been named as the vice-captain of the Indian cricket team in the ODI series against England and also the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

India went into the match without the talismanic Virat Kohli, who was unavailable because of a sore right knee, and at that juncture losing Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) and Rohit Sharma (2) cheaply was a recipe for disaster. But Gill batted sensibly and with Iyer playing a counter-attacking innings, helped India to safety.

Vice-captain Shubman Gill orchestrated India's chase with grace, while debutant Harshit Rana dazzled with the ball as the hosts registered a four-wicket win against England in the series opener.

India rode on Shubman Gill's 87, Shreyas Iyer's 59 and 52 from Axar Patel to win the first game by four wickets. Chasing England's 248, India romped home in 38.4 overs.
