A B-29 was the first Airfix plane kit I ever made and the silver Humbrol paint I used looked like mercury. Don’t know if it’s just the atomic bomb link, but they always seemed special. I wonder if it’s that there are parts of the plane that look similar to the Millennium Falcon.

Nov 11, 2020 · The B-29 Superfortress was covered with guns to protect it from fighters, but having encountered no significant fighter resistance, LeMay stripped the planes of their armor, guns and ammunition. The B-29 had been built for high-altitude precision bombing, but high winds and almost constant cloud cover over the targets made that impossible.

Jul 13, 2014 · I found Boeing B-29 Superfortress T-square Restoration Projects List which talks about the glass and armor in the tail turret. It mentions 3-inch armor glass in the turret, and steel armor, so I think it's a reasonable assumption that the same protection would have been provided around other stations, including the cockpit.
